Fresh stART is a program designed to provide people experiencing homelessness in Oklahoma City with a supportive environment for creating art. In addition to providing a potential source of income, open studio art programs enable people experiencing homelessness to express themselves creatively, manage emotional issues, develop social skills through positive interaction with a peer group, develop confidence and skills transferable to employment.
The Fresh stART studio is open twice a week at the Day Shelter. Volunteers are currently needed on Wednesday mornings. Volunteers must be willing to commit to ongoing service - one or more Wednesdays each month. Volunteers are needed to help set-up the classroom at 8:45 a.m., sign people in, answer questions for artist, provide encouragement, and help with clean-up after class. Please note, during class, there will be downtime. If volunteers would like to bring their own artwork or create something during class, this is encouraged.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older, should feel comfortable in the Day Shelter environment and communicating with guests of all backgrounds. This requires approaching and engaging people in conversations and being friendly and respectful.
If you are interested in assisting with the Fresh stART art studio, please click on the “Respond” button on this page and complete the form. Once you complete the online form, a Fresh stART representative will follow-up with you by e-mail to schedule a day for you to train and volunteer.
