Volunteering  

Children who have experienced abuse or neglect face a frightening, profound unknown. Courtrooms. Foster care. New schools. No child should face these alone. Trained and supported CASA volunteers advocate in court on behalf of these children. They stay with each child until the case is closed and the child is in a safe, permanent home.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate and is a volunteer commitment unlike any other. CASA volunteers are trained, dedicated adults who advocate for a child’s best interests in juvenile court.  The information gathered by the volunteer is submitted to the court. These recommendations and concerns help to better inform the the Judge as he or she makes decisions on the case.  CASA volunteers are guided by their advocate supervisors who provide coaching and oversight throughout the case. To be a CASA volunteer, you must be at least 21 years old and must be able to pass a background check, confidential interview, and successfully complete training.

The CASA volunteer visits the child(ren) on his or her case at least monthly to assess how well they are doing in their current placement and develop a rapport with the child.  The National CASA Association has determined that children with a CASA volunteer on their cases:      

Receive more services than those without a CASA volunteer; Perform better in school (more likely to pass courses, less likely to exhibit poor conduct, and less likely to be expelled); Are more likely to be adopted; Are half as likely to reenter foster care; Are substantially less likely to remain in long term foster care.
