Who We Are

It started with a girl who received a sponsorship for education at the age of 9 in a small village in Kenya. That girl went on to do great things. She is Maisha founder Beatrice Williamson and her desire is to give others that same opportunity for education and a "hand up." Maisha is the Swahili word for “LIFE.” The mission of Maisha is to transform lives and empower communities by providing lasting solutions to address poverty, hunger, disease and under-education. We accomplish that through five projects focused on education, healthcare, empowerment, infrastructure and missions. In the Nyanza Province of Kenya where Maisha is located, the silent epidemic of HIV/AIDS has stolen the lives of mothers, fathers and children; leaving one out of every three households headed by a child. According to Kenya’s Department of Health, one out of every four adults in the Kisumu district is HIV positive. Since its inception in 2006, Maisha has worked with over 700 abandoned, orphaned and destitute children in the rural villages just outside Kisumu and in the Nyalenda slums within Kisumu City to empower them to transform their community. Equally as powerful, Maisha engages people in missions, with outstanding training that continues long after travel to Kenya. Many organizations and philanthropists have been birthed with that desire to do something in their own community. Maisha is determined to break the vicious cycle of poverty through its projects to enhance the quality of life for each child and their community. The impact is told one success story at a time and is collectively known as the "Maisha Story." The story began when Anna Lanson gave Beatrice a sponsorship for education. The story of transformation continues one person at a time thanks to a coalition of support. As Maisha keeps investing in people, hope replaces hopelessness and light overtakes darkness. The Maisha Story ignites the passion in all of us to DO SOMETHING! As you engage, you begin to realize the potential in yourself to create a brighter future, just as Beatrice did. We invite you to become part of the Maisha Story today!
